By Charles Dickens.
I have to admit, that as a lover of classics and period drama, I was rather ashamed of myself for not knowing this collection existed. Obviously, I knew A Christmas Carol and The Signalman but it was on a recent Dickens & Dahl trawl (Yes, Dahl as in Roald Dahl) I came across this little beauty! There is something so satisfying about unearthing something totally unknown with no buzz or hype to work from. This applies only to those of us who do indeed live under a rock so let me have this one…and the countless other non-new discoveries I’m sure I’ll be making…
I’m going to give you a quick list of the contents before I start and hopefully, I’ll get through one every night. In reality, of course, I’ll be lucky if I manage one a week but I’m a wee tiny, tiny bookster and life’s just so much bigger than I am at the moment. Still, a gal can dream can’t she?
- The Queer Chair
- A Madman’s Manuscript
- The Goblins who Stole a Sexton
- The Ghosts of the Mail
- The Baron of Grogszwig
- A Christmas Carol
- The Haunted Man and the Ghosts Bargain
- To be Read at Dusk
- The Ghost in the Brides Chamber
- The Haunted House
- The Trial for Murder
- The Signalman
- Christmas Ghosts
- The Lawyer and the Ghost
- Four Ghost Stories
- The Portrait-Painter’s Story
- Captain Murderer and the Devil’s Bargain
- Mr Testator’s Visitation
- A Child’s Dream of a Star
- Well-Authenticated Rappings
For anybody that’s made their way through works like David Copperfield or Little Dorrit, it’ll be genuinely awesome to know you’re getting that much Dickens packed into this book.
This particular copy is from the Wordsworth Classics range so it was a steal at £2.48 from the wordery but it’s pretty much what you pay for in terms of quality. Not the strongest jackets in the world so you’re in luck if you like the dilapidated, “well-read” look but if not, you might want to throw on a book protector/ sleeve for a bit of longevity.
I can’t wait to get started and fill you guys in on what’s what, but if any of you have already done so or had any favs, drop me a note =)
Great post! As much as I’m into classic English ghost stories, I wasn’t aware of these – so glad you shared! 🙂

I had no idea Dickens wrote any other ghost stories apart from The Signalman and A Christmas Carol! Will try and get hold of this.
