By Roald Dahl.
Now, I understand the audiobook isn’t for everybody. But I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the stories are! That was intentionally vague my tiny treasures because I could be talking about literally any story. There IS a story for EVERYONE. There, I said it! How you like me now huh?! This isn’t actually a post on audiobooks, however, so I am just going to go ahead and dial down the unwarranted aggression…
But this beauty really is worth getting a little puffed up about. Like many children, mine are not averse to being glued to some form of ‘screen’. Rather than die a little on the inside and throw myself to the mummy brigade anymore, I now try to actively look for where and when we can give them something better. Am I expecting them to love books or reading just because I do? No. But I do think that growing up in an environment that reveres the beauty, intellect, thought and respect that comes from books and reading, in any form, might mean they’ll be happy to look up once in a while. But again, I digress. This isn’t a parenting post.
My tiny tiddlers are in a car at least twice a day and like a lot of tiny things, they can get tangled way back there in their back-seat world. Those of you in the know will be well aware that adding the radio to this headache seems not to reduce the headache one iota. Some of our best ideas come from our hardest situations! This was one of those. I came across this set of audiobook CDs in CostCo. Original RRP £123.90 (incidentally one of the weirdest prices I’ve seen), I actually picked this up for less than £20. It was approx £17 which I know can still seem like a lot to spend on a book for some difficult budgets, I do. BUT folks, it’s not just a book…

I don’t like references to things with an underlying condescention rather than expectation of understanding. You know what I mean? When you get the whole “what, do you live under a rock?” attitude. Do I expect you to know who Roald Dahl is or have read his work? No. But I certainly think you will likely recognise his iconic work even if it’s just the “Wonka” on a Carbury’s dairy milk (or some or other derivation) bar. For those of you in the know, I had you at Phizz-Whizzing didn’t I, my tiny Plussies ? But even for you afficianados, there’s always those little facts that we forget- thanks in part for the film adaptations- that we get genuinely excited about rediscovering. Like Willy Wonka having a beard and oompa loompas being more caveman and less carrot, right?
But for those of you not sure of what to expect, be prepared to meet a an ex-olympian murderer of a head mistress, an odious granny with a mouth like a dog’s bottom, Muggle-Wump the twit-defeating monkey (also, the original muggle), The Grand High Witch on a mission to rrrub, sqvash, sqvirt, sqvitter and frrritter every child in England and a whole host more. The sheer imagination and humour in these stories are enough to intrigue even the most scepticle of you tiny comrades. I kid you not, you know I would never do that to you! Here’s a full list of the stories and readers:
